What does “সাধু ভাষা” mean in Bengali?

Written Bengali has two registers. সাধু ভাষা — “chaste language” — is the older literary form, marked by long, formal verb endings like হইয়াছে and বেড়াইতেছে. চলিত ভাষা (“current language”) is the shorter, speech-based style that has been standard since the early twentieth century. Recognising those long endings is enough to date a Bengali text on sight.

The clip quotes a period bioscope advertisement in full সাধু: যাহাকে কল্পনা করেন নাই তাহাই সম্ভব হইয়াছে — “what you never imagined has become possible.” In চলিত that reads যা কল্পনা করেননি তাই সম্ভব হয়েছে. Rabindranath’s move to চলিত helped settle the question; সাধু now survives mainly in old signage, legal text and deliberate pastiche. The word বায়োস্কোপ in the title has its own story — it was the brand of the projector Stevens screened films with in Calcutta in the 1890s, and the machine’s name became a Bengali word for cinema itself.
